Stevie moves onto 4th place in the world cup overall standings | La Bresse, France- Devinci Global Racing’s Steve Smith has earned his 6th top ten finish of the season, moving him into 4th place in the World Cup Overall standings with one race remaining in the 2011 UCI World Cup.
Qualifying ran Saturday with both Devinci Global Racing riders earning excellent start positions for Sunday’s main event. With over 250 riders attempting to qualify for Sunday’s final the field was cut to 80 riders with Smith in 2nd and teammate George Brannigan in 30th. Smith finished 2nd to only current World Cup leader Aaron Gwinn.
Labresse a venue that doesn’t carry the same lengthy prestige as other venues on the World Cup didn’t disappoint again this year providing an amazing course and environment for riders with spectators lining the course.
“There were two beer gardens on the course, people leaning over the tape onto the track, there were people everywhere. The crowd was going crazy the whole way down. It was an amazing place to race.”- George Brannigan
One constant has followed the World Cup Series this season, the constantly changing weather conditions the night before finals. Round 6 was no different as the rain drenched the course, dramatically changing the conditions from what had been ridden all week. Riders awoke from what had been an amazingly fast course to a sloppy mud pit for Sunday causing a mass tire change through the pits.
At the end of the day when all the slop had been flung off the course, Smith finished 7th sliding a little from his initial qualifying position and George finished 41st.
“Being such a short track there were no room for mistakes. I still had a little one up top and I am not thrilled with my run, but I am sure that lots of people are in the same position.”- Steve Smith
Next stops for Devinci Global racing will be the final World Cup Race of the year in Val Di Sol Italy, followed by the World Championships in Switzerland.
